Kameas of the Planets Ancient and Modern

Each Kamea, or magic square, has four significant numbers listed beneath it. Firstly, the dimension of the square, which indicates the raw essence of that planetary energy; secondly, the sum of highest and lowest values, which reveals the guiding principles. Often these principles are expressed in terms of seemingly opposed ideas, so with the example of Saturn we find images of both treading under foot and blossoming; these are resolved in the image of a patient gardener who presses down the earth around his planting, who weeds the bad from the good, who prunes the tree to see it bear more heavily. In most squares this value is also the sum of any two numbers the same distance from the centre of the square, in opposite directions.

The third value is the column sum, which is also the row sum, and the sum of either diagonal. The fourth value is the sum total of all numbers in the square.

Certain Intelligences, Spirits and other entities are associated with these squares, and in most cases their names sum to one of these values; in one instance (that of Hagiel, Intelligence of Venus) the name's value is not 50 but 49, which of course is the number of cells in the square.

Saturn, ruler of limitations, has as his colours the limits of light: the black of midnight and the white of the noonday sun; the dark earth and the life that it brings forth. אב father, teacher, benefactor or sustainer has the value 3; it also means verdure. With a value of 10 we find אזב to blossom, בזא to tread down, destroy and זאב wolf; אט secrecy, concealment or sorcery and its reverse טא dirty; also בדד to bind, cut off and גבה haughty. 15 איד calamity; בוז trample, deride; גאוה haughtiness, majesty; דוה sickly, wretched; חבה to hide; חוא to breathe or speak; יגב to plough, cut up; אהד strong, ידא to confess. 45: אדמ man, mankind, red, to be struck dumb; לוט to conceal.

Jupiter is the wellspring of abundance. To the measure of 17 we have זהה to shine and its partner הזה to dream; גוח to burst forth and its partner חוג to mark out a circle, vault or arch (as with a compass); טוב well-being, prosperity, fertility, luck; חדה rejoice; and יהב to lay (a foundation). 34: אגל to well forth and גאל to reveal; DKY to dash to pieces as in the breakers; KUCh strength. 136 AMTzH strength; NUP to raise up or to fling water; SUO to shoot forth.

Venus is the spouse of Mars, and she has his colours reversed, and lightened and softened to emerald green and pink.

This corrects the usual mis-naming of the Intelligences as Beni Seraphim "Sons of the Seraphim", a phrase which adds up to 1252, not 1225, and connotes fiery, not watery forces!

אוב with the value 9 means to be hollow, and also signifies a water-skin, leather bottle or hollow belly — from which the voice of a conjured spirit emanates as though from the very earth itself. Its reverse, בוא, means to enter. We find these ideas repeated and more directly tied to the moon in words with the value 82: נבל to droop, fade, flow out also signifies a leather bottle or a pitcher; the reverse of this word, לבנ, means white or to make bricks. Bricks are of course Lavanah (לבנה) a word which also means moon.

This square of 10 by 10 is clearly the square of Earth, the tenth Qabalistic sphere. That the Hebrew מלוכה "kingdom" has a value of 101 merely underlines this fact.

Beyond this point the kameas are trans-personal, dealing with energies outside the normal business of an individual. Indeed, beyond this point the individual cannot go, and still remain him- or herself. Remember: humanity, along with all other living things, owes its allegiance to creation, not to the blind forces of chaos and decay.

11 is, of course, often applied to Da"ath, the great abyss beyond which individual existence ends, but it is also the number of the Qlippoth, the broken shells of creation where the raw waste of reality is destroyed and recycled. Not normally a place for humanity to step into, but it serves its purpose. Numerically, 11 is the pit, slaughter, excrement, the howl of horror and the buzzing fly, but it is also birth, the gleam of gold and that which is good. The shells of the Qlippoth find their echo in בצל, to be shedding peelings (like an onion), with the value 122. The cosmic compost heap.

This Kamea as well is tied to Da"ath, this time as the great silence. 12 is the measure of אבדה, the Abyss, and of בהה to be silent, still, empty. The gematria of 145 casts further light on this. If we ignore the final, הצנ "chariot" also measures 145. The chariot appears in both Hebrew mysticism and in the Tarot as a vehicle beyond the bounds of self.
